Antigua (Guatemala)

Visit Guatemala on a Marella Cruise from TUI.  Sailing December 2021​Surrounded by volcanoes Antigua is the perfect starting point for a visit to Guatemala. Spanish colonial buildings and the Santa Catalina Arch are much photographed.  Easter brings the Semana Santa celebrations but it’s not all about religion.  There are many good restaurants, bars and cafes to tempt you.  Make a point of visiting the sculpture park and go to Cerro de la Cruz for a panoramic view of the city.

Rio Dulce & Livingston

​The Afro-Caribbean Garifuna people from St Vincent brought their culture to this region. The beautiful beaches can only be accessed by boat.  Rio Dulce & Livingston is the hub for excursions into jungles, canyons and waterways.

Lake Atitlan

Nineteenth century writer John L Stephens proclaimed that Lake Atitlan was “the most magnificent spectacle we ever saw”.  Set in the Sierra Madre mountains it is fringed by green hills and distant volcanoes.  Start your journey in Panajachel, visit Santa Cruz La Laguna and Jaibalito and the Mayan ruins at Santiago Atitlán 

Tikal Ruins

​A UNESCO listed series of stepped pyramids in Guatemala’s Peten region these Mayan ruins date back to about 700 BCC.   Tikal Ruins was once a thriving community that is now being reclaimed by the rain forest.

Semuc Champey

​Semuc Champey comprises of six naturally tiered pools within the Cahabón River amongst the thick forests of the Alta Verapaz.  You’ll need to travel here by a four wheel drive vehicle.  Once here enjoy the pools, rope swings and hikes.

Day 1. Fly from UK or Ireland to Guatemala City
Day 2. Visit to the Quirigua Archaeological Park. Transfer Rio Dulce
Day 3 by boat to Livingstone passing the Catle of San Felipe de Lara then transfer to Flores
Day 4. Explore Tilal, the most important Mayan site in South America
Day 5 Transfer to Coban stopping at Candelaria Caves National Park.  The largest Cave system in Latin America and very important to the Mayans
Day 6. Excursion to the limestone pools at Semuc Champey
Day 7. Excursion to Biiotopa del Quetzal National Park.  This cloud forest nature reserve boasts some 50 species of trees, many are over 450 years old.  Continue to Guatemala City, overnight stay.
Day 8. Visit the Chichicastenango market before transferring to Lake Atitlan and a panoramic tour of Panajachel
Day 9. A boat ride takes you to the indigenous village at San Juan La Laguna.  Transfer to Antigua Guatemala
Day 10. Full day tour of Antigua
Day 11. Return flights home.
